How much paint do I need?
Enter the room and get the gallons for walls, ceiling and trim - two coats and a little extra included. Then pick the color and see it on your own room.
Estimates only: rough surfaces, dark colors and color changes can need more. One gallon covers about 350 sq ft per coat on smooth, primed walls.
Questions people ask
How much paint do I need for a 12 x 12 room?
A 12 x 12 room with 8-foot ceilings has about 384 sq ft of wall. Take off one door and two windows and it is about 333 sq ft; two coats is roughly 2 gallons of wall paint, plus about 1 gallon for the ceiling if you paint it.
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
About 350 to 400 sq ft per coat on smooth, primed walls. Textured, porous or bare surfaces take more - plan on about 250 sq ft.
Do I need two coats?
Almost always. Two coats give an even color and the sheen the paint was made to have, especially when changing colors or covering a darker one.
Should I buy extra?
Yes - about 10% for touch-ups, and so the whole job comes from the same batch. The calculator already adds it.
How much paint for the outside of a house?
Measure around the house and multiply by the wall height. A single-story house about 180 ft around with 10 ft walls is roughly 2,000 sq ft of wall with gables - about 15 gallons for two coats of the body color, plus trim. Windows and doors bring it down a little.
